Bullet Heaven #235 - Iron Crypticle (Switch)

Iron Crypticle has its hands in a lot of cookie jars. Some Gauntlet, some Smash TV, some Bubble Bobble, a dash of diablo and a sprinkle of roguelike come together to make a dungeon crawling shooting game for four players that didn't disappoint. But how does it stack up?

QCF: Evolve

Disclaimer: The following review of Evolve is from a press build of the game on PC. Because of the lack of online play with a large amount of players, this review is on the offline mode of the game. There was gameplay online with other players with early access, however because this title will be mainly a game with a online multiplayer focus, the final review score will not factor in the online play. We at Press Pause Radio will revise this review as necessary once the final build of the game has released. Thank you.

urtle Rock Studio’s upcoming shooter Evolve has been creating plenty of buzz since last summer when it won the Best of Show award at E3 as well as the Best of Gamescom award, the only title to win both prestigious accolades. After an alpha test on the various platforms and a beta run on Xbox One, the title is now set to release with it’s interesting concept of four human players playing against a fifth player taking on the role of the enemy boss. The brainchild from the same developers as Left 4 Dead has accomplished the goal in creating a multiplayer experience that has a large amount of recapitulation and depth, but the online component will be what decides if the title can live up to it’s potential.

QCF: Killzone Mercenary

ince the release of the Playstation Vita in February of 2012, the system has had a tough time of attracting gamers to their portable experiences. A few attempts at first person shooters proved to be critical failures, unable to capture the fast paced action on a much smaller screen. When Killzone Mercenary was announced, many thought that the Vita could finally have a competent shooter on the go. Thankfully after playing through the campaign as well as dying more than several times in multiplayer, I can say that the Vita finally has its shooter.

The player assumes the role of Arran Danner who is, as the game’s title suggests a mercenary. If you happen to forget about what your job description is do not fret; the mention of money and doing a job for the quick paycheck will be mentioned several times. The plot of the game is very thin, and features the same beats from most action movies that tell the tale of one man who battles not only an endless army, but his morality as well. The story is easy to disregard, since the main campaign will take most players to about the five hour mark to complete. However the action held within these few hours will be worth the price of admission for any Vita owner.

PAX Prime 2013: Hopping into Titanfall

earing all of the critical acclaim and buzz surrounding Titanfall, I was excited to try out the new first person shooter from Respawn Entertainment. However I had several reservations, due to the fact that anytime I have looked forward to a new shooter, I jump into the multiplayer and realize that I am terrible at shooters. Seeing as how the developers of Titanfall were originally from the same team that created the Modern Warfare series of games, I assumed I would play the multiplayer, perform horribly and never play the game again. After my time with the game, however I can say that Titanfall is my most anticipated release for the next generation of systems.

GDC 2013: Towerfall brings all the boys to the yard

013 is the year for the local-couch co-op play renaissance. Developers are embracing the personal open forum of pummeling their friends within inches of each other. Matt Thornsen has been developing a title that’s poised to lead the charge out of the pack with his work on Towerfall, a four-player arena fighting game that takes elements from a variable palate of ideas and makes for an indefinable label but potentially excellent slobber knocker. We had the pleasure to hang out and play Matt’s display at the Indie Mixer, and here are our thoughts.

QCF: Anarchy Reigns

latinum Games has been busy going into 2013. Spearheading upcoming releases like Bayonetta 2 and The Wonderful 101 along with staying on track with their collaborative efforts with Konami on Metal Gear Rising: Revengance, there was another title too. What was it again? Oh yeah, that multiplayer beat’em up, Anarchy Reigns.

The action multiplayer-focused title delivers the punches and fan-service for fans of Madworld and Bayonetta, the expectations for a multiplayer title centered on character action combat incited quite a depth of potential considering the studio behind the reigns. The genre of arena based fighters always bring a new element to direct combat that distinguish it from traditional fighting games. More often than not, games which come to mind when one thinks of this category is Power Stone or Super Smash Bros. Whenever the topic enters discussion, Anarchy Reigns tries to expand on this formula.

The end result, however, is a wasteland of missed opportunities populated with rough gameplay that contains a dearth of personality to round out the full circle of disappointment that is Anarchy Reigns.

QCF: Chasing Aurora

Broken Rules has volunteered to be the forerunner of independently developed game for the Wii U, an admirably brave task considering that larger, more experienced studios have been skeptical of their own ability to significantly take advantage of the Wii U’s potential. Nintendo's new console excels at offering a cavalcade of dynamics in a multiplayer setting, evident by the direction of Nintendoland.

Broken Rules therefore staked their hands at creating their software that centered on a competitive theme with their imaginative take on the philosophy of flight through the portrayal of paper art in Chasing Aurora. While the cliché of an indie studio taking the humble route in order to concentrate all production value towards the creative process and to convey a deeper meaning through a solid game mechanic, the Austrian studio takes this trait to heart, and it works both against them and in their favor in the end.

PAX Prime 2012: God of War: Ascension Preview

Earlier this year, Sony and Santa Monica Studios treated us to the reveal of the latest God of War title. And while we’ve seen our favorite angsty and ghostly killer about four or five times now, Santa Monica boasted the inclusion of multiplayer, and a refinement to the single player experience was also promised -- mighty big words from the studio, but the results surprisingly surpassed any predetermined expectations.
