QCF: DOOM (2016)

ou ever heard the term, lightning doesn’t strike twice in the same spot? Well, it’s true, and the connation behind the idiom is meant to infer just how hard it is to reproduce the impact of something memorable like that lightning strike; so to add to that, for the sake of this argument, let’s just say that this “lightning strike” we’re referring to is the original DOOM that released way back in 1993.

The original DOOM was monumental, it forever changed the landscape of video games, and what anyone could ever perceive out of them—as you kids would say, “that shit was straight LIT.”

Needless to say, the DOOM franchise became a household name, and has remained one for years to come, regardless of how hard it’s been for the series to successfully transition into the modern age of shooters—a shit ton of shooters mind you.

While Doom 3 failed to do that, this new eponymous reboot has not; in fact…

Doom (2016) is one of the most refreshing breaths of fresh air that you can experience out of a shooter in today’s saturated climate, like, this game has no business being as good as it is.

QCF: Code of Princess

reasure's games seem like such a distant memory. Their last original game, Sin and Punishment: Star Successor (Wii) was released all the way back in 2010, with nothing more than re-releases of its now-ancient properties seeing release since.

One such game, Guardian Heroes, would see a release on Xbox Live Arcade, finally making it available to the masses for a very affordable price compared to its original Saturn release. Fast forward to 2013; Code of Princess debuts on the 3DS, by way of Atlus games. It features nearly carbon-copy gameplay to Guardian Heroes with a neat ragtag cast of interesting characters, led by the practically unclothed Princess Solange. It was also a pretty limited release, all told, which is where Degica Games' newly released Steam version of the game comes in.

QCF Hardware Review: Antlion Audio ModMic 4.0

here are very few things that I'm really picky about in life, but one thing that drives me mad is terrible audio quality. A great many headsets – with Turtle Beach headsets in specific - have atrocious sound reproduction, often with washed out mid tones, breathy, shrieking highs and not enough bottom end. The result is a nasty migraine if listened to for too long. Even then, the microphone quality can suffer even on higher-end headsets, no matter the cost. Without going to a $350.00+ solution with a very expensive cardioid or ribbon mic, a good set of headphones and a mixer to bring it all together via USB, could there actually be a way to marry an existing, great-sounding set of headphones that you already use with an excellent quality mic instead? Which now leads us to the big question; what if you could do it for just $50?

PPR Presents Play Play: Killer Instinct-Season 3

he torch has been passed once again, and now it would appear that Iron Galaxy will carry on the support and development to the latest episodic entry into Microsoft’s exclusive modern fighting franchise with Killer Instinct Season 3—and thankfully enough, it’s just as exciting, if not even more enjoyable than ever before.

And honestly, how could you not freak out about a game where you can play as a Battletoad that gets to up on the Anti-hero from Halo 2; shit’s dope y’all.

Andrew and George hash out their thoughts on this new edition of KI, the state of the Fighting Game scene; including how badly they wanted to like Street Fighter V more than they actually did, and more in this latest Play Play from Press Pause Radio.

PPR Presents Play Play: Hyper Light Drifter

he Legend of Zelda: A Link to The Past is one of most influential games in history, a masterpiece that will stand the test of time as one of the iconic showcases of game design. As such, it’s only natural that it would inspire the generation of games that followed its prime, and one day, there’s going to be a game that will outshine it.

Hyper Light Drifter isn’t that game mind you, but God Damn is it ever close to accomplishing that.

George takes full command in this edition of Play Play where plays through the beginning of Heart Machine’s love letter to ALTTP, and goes on about the delicately brilliant nuances to this title’s ebb and flow, and hauntingly beautiful Éric Chahi-like pixel animation, and art.
