Bullet Heaven HD, Episode 72 - Star Soldier: Vanishing earth

ow many traditional shooters does the Nintendo 64 have in it's library? Hint: I can count them on one finger. Reviews from 1999 scathe it. Fan websites revile it. But is it honestly worth all the hate? In episode 72 of Bullet Heaven HD, we take a look at Star Soldier: Vanishing Earth on the Nintendo 64.

SPECIAL THANKS to Georgie BoysAXE for this cartridge!

QCF: Game Dev Tycoon

ame Dev Tycoon is a game I've wished for since playing Game Dev Story back in 2010. I couldn’t tell you how much I played that game. In fact, it was my game of the year back then. So when picking up Game Dev Tycoon and diving in to a deeper, more fleshed-out version of that same experience, you’d think that I'd be jumping for joy the entire way through. However, what I really discovered is a game so difficult to wrap my head around that it's almost a cautionary tale about the current state of game development.

GDT starts you out as an indie developer toiling away at your computer and developing games in your garage. There's no real narrative in place, so you just start making games back in the early days of gaming before the NES even launched. Being that you're a one-person game making machine, you begin to pump a text adventure here and military strategy game there. Once you gain a little money you can invest in developing your own engine and research new types of games.

PPR Anniversary episode voter poll

his Saturday is going to be a big day for us people; it’ll be 4 amazing fucking years since we launched Press Pause Radio. Last year, we chose to record commentary for the cinematic classic, The Wizard; with a drinking game on top—we’re going to make that very same mistake again this year, and this time, we’re giving you guys the choice. We’ve made it pretty easy, all you have to do is vote in this incredibly convenient poll, and determine which particular film will play as we record all the horrible choices we’re going to make watching it, and this is for your entertainment folks. We’ll be checking the results this Friday night so get at us!

Which Movie should be feature presentation for Press Pause Radio's four year anniversary special?

So the votes have it, we're going to be recording commentary for the notoriously awful 1993 film, Super Mario Bros.-The Movie. Directed by the fickle husband/wife duo Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel, the movie exists as a scar in everyone of our childhoods be it the terrible acting or the criminally liberal take on the lore of the Japanese video game icon, this movie is an abortion pure and simple. It gets better though folks because not only will we be recording commentary, we'll be playing the officially recognized drinking game for this dog turd of a film, here are the rules for you folks...

Every time that Mario and/or Luigi refer to each other by name or mention Daisy, take a drink.
Whenever “the rock” is mentioned (or meteorite), take a drink.
Anytime the bob-omb appears randomly, take a drink.
Every time there is a forced reference to the Super Mario games, take a drink.
Every time, the “fungus” is shown on screen (you know which one), take a drink.
Everytime the ‪Devo Machine‬ is used to make someone evolve or de-evolve, take a drink.
Whenever it is mentioned, or Mario and Luigi use their plumbing skills, take a drink.

QCF: BattleBlock Theater

he Behemoth always knows how to take a classic formula and make it something special, be it with aliens and Russians in Alien Hominid or the absurdly hilariously animated brawling antics in Castle Crashers, thier games just ooze style and humor. No small wonder with their vintage internet roots on Newgrounds.com. And, as it turns out, things have only still kept getting more awesomer, for real, with Battleblock Theater, a tale of shipwrecked friends, mysterious feline entities on a mysterious island, and Hatty Hattington, friend of all and forced to watch himself test the mettle of all those he loved in a jail-turned theater of sadistic horrors, aggressive cats, constant danger, and certain death.

ometimes life can be like a hurricane, and when it is, then you should be sure to grab on to some Disney games. The podcast gets heavy as we discuss all of the games and news from EA securing publishing/developing rights for Star Wars to Nintendo fucking around, and finally the featured topic, Walt Disney video games. Over the last 20 years we’ve seen a variety of licenses from the big D transformed into games, and we discuss whether these games are a testament of quality because of the license itself or their design-- we get steamy folks.
