PPR Presents Play Play: Project AXSX Demo

ne of the more intricate nuances of video game culture strangely enough is all of the content that doesn’t leave the cutting room floor. The unreleased treasure trove of games and levels comprise a sense of personal history that actively distinguishes video games from any other media form to this very day.

When these canceled bits of code and projects actually manage to see the light of day, the gaming community strives to make sure that spread the forbidden lovejoy of these unearthed games for as many as they can to play it; and sometimes, it takes some fan efforts to go on and finish what the original team never could. Chris Senn’s effort for the famous hedgehog’s flagship Saturn effort for example is a holy grail of sorts for unreleased games; and a team of fans by the name of Project AXSX has taken it upon themselves to deliver a fan completion of the mythical Sonic X-treme.

We got our hands on a demo of it, a really early work-in-progress of it, and well, we try to be really over optimistic over whether or not this ambitious take on the blue blur deserves to exist.

PPR Presents Play Play: Crypt of Necrodancer

onestly, I have to admit, it’s been too long since I unfolded the crinkley, vinyl mess of dance pad that I use to kick and stomp on during the pre-Guitar Hero days that Dance Dance Revolution ruled the block. I just couldn’t say no to the idea of crawling through dozens of dungeon floors through the sole use of sweet footwork on the mat—I have Brace Yourself Games to thank for that, with the their up and coming title, Crypt of The Necrodancer.

This Play Play is a little different, I decided what better way to showcase just how ridiculously awesome this whole thing really is, than to giving you all an inside-look on the slick moves being done by yours truly, via split screen. Check it out, and if you like what you see, you can buy the game on Steam Early Access!

PPR Presents Play Play: Street Fighter X Mega Man

t’s no secret that we’ve seen the Blue Bomber make appearances within a slew of fighting games like the latest Super Smash Bros for example, but only once have we ever seen a group of brawlers ever step onto Mega Man’s turf; and boy did Capcom make a day out of it.

We pull out our keyboards and USB controllers to navigate the Super Fighting Robot as he challenges the World Warriors of Street Fighter fame and the PPR gang gathers around.

George has some second thoughts about his initial impressions around the game when it first launched while Gil argues that the game is more charming than it ever was if anything else, and Ser is just happy to hear the jarbled nonsense of what a “Shoryuken” sounds like when ran through emulated 8-bit sound processor and more!

PPR Presents Play Play: Mario Clash

yestrain be damned, the PPR crew decide to take the leap against Al’s advice, (or any other sane person for that matter), back in the crimson long-stare of the Nintendo Virtual Boy.

So what sort of disappointment have we signed up for this time around? Mario Clash—an enhanced, stereoscopic take on the original Mario Bros, and a side of JR Tolkien flavored nightmare fuel for good measure.

The cast on tap is humorously diverse on the title; Ser has fond memories, George thinks it’s a pile of hot trash, and Gil ended up suffering an existential crisis from the whole thing all together—what a Play Play right!?

PPR Presents Play Play: Pokémon Type Wild

intendo and Bandai Namco dropped a pretty loud bombshell of a reveal last month with the announcement of a collaborative development of a Pokémon spin-off that’ll be styled in the vein of a Tekken fighter.

I mean, it’s one of the experiments that Pokémanics have all been waiting for aside from the boisterous demand for an MMO of the license right? Well…

Some really talented folks who already have experience with working on the property have taken it upon themselves to release fan-produced freeware title that endorses all of the proud tradition and convention of 2D fighters—Pokémon Type Wild.

A handful of us here at PPR give this quirky take on the brand a spin, and share some opinion on why it may have already outdone whatever fighting game that the official folks are cooking up.

PPR Presents Play Play: Legend of Princess

ow that Nintendo has embraced the idea of Link and the gang getting fierce and brutal with Hyrule Warriors, we figure we would drum up another action-heavy approach to the Zelda-cannon; that’s ironically not recognized as cannon because it’s a fan game—a super sweet fan game.

Join Ser, Gil, and Georgie as they guide the inconspicuously salmon pink haired antagonist through labyrinthine death-traps and colorfully bat-shit nonsense that can’t help but scream Z-E-L-D-A from the top of its figurative lungs in Legend of Princess.

This is a freeware title too, join in on the fun right here!

PAX PRIME 2014: Play Play Special-Airscape: Fall of Gravity

onestly, there were a ton of games from the Indie Mega Booth that we really enjoyed playing, even if they didn’t make into our covered feature of the exhibit, and one in particular was Airscape: Fall of Gravity.

C’mon you guys, an adorable space squid who defies the laws of physics in order to save all of his equally adorable space fishy friends? Of course we’re going to play it and check it out. Join us, as we stumble in awe of the ingenious take on momentum and inertia, and try to make the best of the journey in our sleep deprived states; it was still a ton of fun though, check it out!

PPR Presents Play Play: Mega Man X: Maverick Hunter

eiji Inafune has his hands pretty full living when it comes to living the dream. Dude’s essentially been able to carry on the spirit of his beloved Blue Bomber through the likes of still developing Mighty No.9 and the upcoming arrival of his other project, Azure Striker Gunvolt, next week—both have an avoidably bright glow of aromatization for Classic Mega Man in numerous ways.

The writing on the wall has been pretty clear that Mega Man isn’t a priority at the moment for Capcom, and while fans eagerly play these spiritual successors, one has to wonder about the fate of another Mega Man franchise that’s strangely been absent in recent years; Mega Man X.

Gil and George discuss these things, Dragon Ball Z, and more nonsense as they check out the penultimate game of the series for this latest Play Play—Mega Man X: Maverick Hunter.
