PAX Prime 2012: The best of the best at the Indie Mega Booth

This is it, our favorite part of coverage for any PAX; new indie games! PAX Prime 2012 was home to the Indie Mega Booth with over thirty games featured. Never before have we had access to so many different indie titles at once which posed the difficult question as to how to tackle all of these games at once. After much intense nerdy deliberation, we decided to choose twelve of our favorites and the honor of our title for the King of Indie Mega Booth! QCF: Wreckateer

I went into Wreckateer with extremely low expectations. Given the abysmal showing the game had at E3 this year and the fact that it looked like an Angry Birds clone for Kinect, I was expecting to lazily flap my arms like a jackass while boulders broke stuff. After spending some time with Wreckateer, however, I began seeing how it's much more than just a clone of a cell phone game. In fact, this may be one of the better Kinect games on the Xbox that doesn’t require you to perform the Jersey Turnpike for bonus points.

PPR at PAX Prime 2012: The Prologue

Don’t be a JAFO! The crew comes together to discuss what they have on their plate for PAX Prime. We discuss in detail what we’re looking forward to out of the Indie Megabooth, the panels on tap, and who we’re looking forward to meeting! This will be the first ever appearance that PPR will be making at PAX Prime, and while we’re certain that Seattle isn’t quite ready for us to plauge their fair city, we plan on making this an experience to look back on for the ages!

QCF: Dust: An Elysian Tail

Turmoil reigns heavy in the kingdom of Falana as hundreds of troops lay waste to the land. Led by an intolerant general who’s bent on the extermination of an entire tribe, all hope falls on the summoned hero of the blade and his...ferret with wings. Xbox LIVE's Summer of Arcade comes to a close, and to end the annual line of releases is Dust: An Elysian Tail, an indie developed platformer from Dean Doodril of Humble Hearts (this dude is the entire studio).

Dust has come a long way since we last saw it at PAX East. With nearly nine years in the making, Dust takes an assortment of familiar conventions from gaming’s past and blends them into a formula that delivers one of the most memorable experiences in video games this year.

QCF: Rainbow Moon

Rainbow Moon is a strategy RPG exclusive to Sony’s Playstation Network. The game was developed by SideQuest Studios and published through EastAsiaSoft in July, 2012 for both European and North American territories. Boasting forty hours of content for $15, Rainbow Moon almost seemed too good to be true.  After spending the better part of two weeks with it, I’m happy to report that Rainbow Moon delivers.

QCF: Deadlight

The splintering crash of planks litters the ground as Randal Wayne bursts through and races down the residential streets of Seattle, boring into home after home to escape the ever-growing reach of the undead, the shadows. Microsoft’s Summer of Arcade is in full swing yet again for 2012, and Tequila Works has rolled out their inaugural release, Deadlight for Xbox Live Arcade. Zombie games have far exceeded the threshold of saturation in today’s market, but boasting the talents of individuals with backgrounds ranging from Sony Computer Entertainment Europe to Blizzard Entertainment, Tequila Works managed to infuse innovative yet subtle nuances on the aging side-scroller formula.

QCF: Stay Dead

Indie efforts generally labor towards the riskier side of things when it comes to developing games. Applying niche genres to their games isn’t too far from said practice and BRUCE Film studios aimed pretty high when they sought to make the FMV (Full-Motion Video) genre relevant again with their latest PC release Stay Dead. Although reliving an era that brought us classics like Double Switch and Wing Commander seems debatable, Stay Dead enforces all the genre’s shortcomings and somehow finds a way add even more flaws.

QCF: Spelunky

I hate Spelunky. I absolutely despise and utterly hate this game. However, I cannot seem to stop playing it. This bastard offspring of Dark Souls and Super Meat Boy is the most punishing gaming experience that I have ever encountered, but it is so charming and on rare occasions rewarding. I say rare because of the simple fact that I die all of the time. With each new start, however, there is another path that may lead to the victory I so desperately need.  For a game to be as cruel and brutal as Spelunky, it is still a great game that has so much to offer just so long as the player has the fortitude and patience to see it through to the end.
