PPR Presents Now Showing: 08/12/2014

he summer doldrums carry on, and while the some of us here on the site are enjoying the down time in between the reviews and podcasts, the season is perfect for pumping all of us up for the holiday season that’s upon us.

The theme in this Now Showing is Multiplayer folks; there’s that fancy shmancy new next-generation multiplayer Assassin’s Creed Unity. Then there’s the multiplayer of the upcoming Natural Doctrine from NIS America for the JRPG fans salivating for it on the PS4.

Phantom Breaker Battlegrounds fights it’s way on the PS Vita, encouraging players that they can still bring a friend or two. Finally, WayForward is working on the third Adventure Time game to hit consoles soon; we don’t know if it’s multiplayer to be honest, but it looks fun as shit.

The heat’s coming round, and before we know it, the sunshine will be gone so soak it in while you can, I know we are—because within weeks, we’ll be hitting the street of Seattle for PAX Prime, enjoy the trailers folks!

QCF: Lifeless Planet

hile I'm not much for a game that is too expansive with a bajillion things to collect, I am rather into the kinds of games that have a great sense of exploration. Games that present a world that makes me go, “huh, I sure wish I could visit this place in real life.” I had seen previews of Lifeless Planet and it instantly got me thinking. “What is this world? Why is there a small house on the edge of a massive crater?

Why no trees? What's with the desert? Does this guy really need a space suit?” All of these questions and more are answered through an incredible, story driven action-platformer-lite presentation with heavy emphasis on exploring a world strikingly similar to ours if it were, you know, lifeless.

PPR Games Club: The Wolf Among Us

eorge and Andrew are back, and after a busy week of personal lives and San Diego Comic Con watching, the duo is set to celebrate the stretch end of Press Pause Radio’s newest Games Club: Telltale’s The Wolf Among Us.

Based on the popular Vertigo franchise from Bill Willingham of modern day fairy tales, we talk at length over the depiction and care involved with this original story in the Fables universe, and just how well it manages to convey the presentation and feel of the adult fantasy series, whether you’re new or a fan familiar with its comic base.

We’ve brought to you not only our usual podcast, covering our overall feelings and after thoughts about the game, in and out, but we’ve brought on board a video companion series, detailing certain choices, statistics, and detailed analysis over the subtle details at play in this murder mystery.

Mail us at our new email Mailbag@presspauseradio.com, leave a voicemail at 469-PPR-TALK, and be sure to stop by at our Forums if you haven’t already registered and post your thoughts about the show. QCF: Valiant Hearts: The Great War

o say that the depiction of war in video games is a bit misgiving when it comes to displaying the harsh reality of its trauma and destruction would be an understatement, because video games are supposed to be fun; who has the stomach to digest all of that deep shit, am I right?

Valiant Hearts is an emotional campaign that challenges the usual representation of those historical conflicts by centering on the first global battle that rocked our planet. The third UbiArt Framework driven game from the Montreal studio is an unassumingly beautiful animated take on World War 1 that truly channels the cruel gravity of conflict in ways that are equal parts compelling, as they are heart wrenching, to a deafening extent the deeper players venture through it.
