QCF: Mortal Kombat X

hile the medium of video games has surely played host to a litany of aged franchises that have handily worn out their welcome through the years, there’s no denying that there a few franchises with a sense of appeal that truly stand the test of time.

And among these exceptionally iconic properties, there are those few choice that barely earned that love among the gaming community by the skin of their teeth, and this particular title is one of those prime examples.

As strange and brutal as this may sound, I think the best thing that could’ve happen to Ed Boon and the remainder of the Mortal Kombat team (now presently working at the newly formed Netherrealm Studios) was the dissolution of Midway Games. Because it was at that juncture that the veteran group of developers truly stepped up their game and Mortal Kombat X is the finest example of that statement yet.

PPR Presents Play Play: Super Air Zonk

k, so we did get a bit distracted when we first started our special look at the Bonk series the last couple of months and just ended up being really sporadic with our video coverage, but let me tell you, we sure as shit didn’t forget about it

This latest entry is our look at Super Air Zonk, the rare, often forgotten sequel to the shoot-em up spinoff of the iconic, bulbous-headed Neanderthal. This quote unquote “Rockabilly Paradise” goes in a significantly different direction with its gameplay in comparison to its predecessor, and Ser and George discuss upon whether or not that was a good thing, with flying bento box attacks and all.

QCF: Bloodborne

ow that the skill and challenge of video games has caught a second wind, the waves of difficult games have been coming out of the woodwork from both the western, and eastern hemispheres of the world. The thrill of ever stacking odds working against your favor is slowly growing into insatiable sensation that’s winning over the free time and attention of those who fall victim to it’s addictive, yet punishing taste.

A relatively new property to have come out of the last generation of video games by FROM Software is credited with pioneering the resurgence of mercilessly challenging gameplay design we’ve seen on the modern scene with their “Souls” franchise.

While still relatively niche on the whole, Sony’s involvement with the developer may have changed the game with the latest title from the mold, Bloodborne; a celebration of everything that makes the cult-style of action game so intimidating, and so appealing all at once.

QCF: Batman: Arkham Knight

hen Rocksteady defied the odds with their stellar take on the caped Crusader with Batman Arkham Asylum in 2009, the sky was the limit with all of the potential its foundation of gameplay had to expand upon within the rich fiction that the Dark Night’s universe had to offer.

Like, what if we could take Batman out of the Asylum, and onto the mean streets of Gotham city itself, able zoom around the urban crime scene in his trusty Batmobile and everything, with entire skylines to grapple and slink though and all!

Six years, and three entries later, Rocksteady Games drops the latest title to grace the Vigilante’s iconic gaming series that promise to deliver all of that and more; Batman: Arkham Knight, and now that it’s finally here—it’s kind of disappointing that the reality doesn’t live up to the expectations we had with the fantasy all those years ago…

QCF: Yatagarasu: Attack on Cataclysm

n the Indie Megabooth at PAX Prime 2012, we looked at Yatagarasu, an indie-produced fighting game with some pretty intense developer pedigree. Now, I'm not nearly the best VS. Fighter by local standards - hell, not even by household standards—but Yatagarasu, even in its early form at PAX Prime 2012, was balanced enough that I could take on and defeat all comers.

Yatagarasu has come a long way since then, and has been released to Steam by Nyu-Media as Yatagarasu: Attack on Cataclysm. As a pretty big fan of the King of Fighters series, of course I was jazzed to get into the action, given its ex-SNK/KoF staff and similar character sprite work. But how has it held up?

Not especially well, I'm afraid to report. But more on that in a moment. There's still lots to like about Yatagarasu: Attack on Cataclysm, as we'll see. Primarily, your typical, standard modes apply here; Arcade, Story Arcade, Versus, Network Versus, Training and a bevy of options from online to local, control to difficulty, replays, ranks and everything in between. The level of customizability in Yatagarasu :AoC is pretty impressive, and allows players to really fine-tune their experience with a bit of technical know-how.

We’re here to discuss all of the highlights of the press events and announcements dropped at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo.

This episode dives into Holo-lens, Backwards-Compatibility, Fallout 4, Super Mario Maker, Super Smash Bros DLC, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Shenmue III, and more; E3 was weirdly fun this year, maybe we might enjoy the next one like this? PPR Presents Play Play: Final Fantasy Type-0 HD

t’s always a joy when the west gets a Final Fantasy game that they originally missed out on, and the deal sounds even sweeter when the game gets an HD facelift to boot; which is why it’s disappointing that this long lost Final Fantasy gem is so disappointing, and violent too.

Like, weirdly violent, if adorably birds being bloodied death doesn’t sound like a good time, then consider this your trigger warning, Final Fantasy Type-0 HD has lots of this shit from the start…

Ser and George attempt to find the fun that the game has to offer, and discuss design elements that they feel would be more ideal for an action RPG title (and they’ll try to find as many as they can in this pretty mess of game too.)
