PPR 109

am so happy that George is able to take the time to upload our podcasts on a regular basis, because I struggle with it every time I am tasked with the responsibility. Like, I had to spend some time just trying to find those pixilated letters that he uses at the start of his posts, and then could not figure out how to line it up right in the paragraph. So if you are a fan of those in your podcast feed, you will be very disappointed. Internet is hard work, you guys. (Don't worry, I got him covered when I can!-G.)

Speaking of hard work, clone systems at times can seem like a labor of love for the systems of the past. Most times, however they seem like they were churned out as a quick money making opportunity, devoid of any sort of time and care that made the original such a treasured piece of hardware. Our crew will dive into the recent wave of re-imagined gaming consoles, as well as controversy surrounding former Donkey Kong world record holders, a whole mess of Switch titles and newer releases such as Yakuza 6 and Far Cry 5.

Mail us at our new email Mailbag@presspauseradio.com, leave a voicemail at 469-PPR-TALK, and be sure to stop by at our Forums if you haven’t already registered and post your thoughts about the show. Finally, make sure to rate and subscribe to us on iTunes and YouTube, follow us on Twitch page and Twitter, and finally take part in our Facebook and Steam group!

Mudprints Unboxes FHR: Hyperkin Supa Retron HD

t's an exciting age for retro gamers. New dedicated consoles that don;t rely on emulation are being produced to bring classic games to the modern televisison. Some are less great than others, and some of the better options cost way more than many. But We think we've found a great balance between performance and cost for those that may not have the cash to spend on an FPGA soloution or expensive upscalers... and people that don't like Phil Fish.

Hyperkin's Supa retron HD Is an attractive package... but how does it stack up?

QCF: Yakuza 6: The Song of Life

he Yakuza franchise may owe a great deal of its legacy to Shenmue, but it’s done a great deal more on its own, and rightfully escaped the shadow that Yu Suzuki’s classic had once cast over it. Spanning across five epic chapters, a host of non-sequitur spin-offs, and a stellar prequel in its own right, Yakuza 6: The Song of Life is the newest title to enter the fold, and was announced to be the final chapter in the Ryū ga Gotoku saga.

Although the future of the property seems uncertain, SEGA hasn’t spared any expense with the finale; Kazuma Kiryu’s last hurrah is every bit of the bittersweet epic that it sets itself out to be and then some.

QCF: Fear Effect Sedna

fter a seventeen year chasm in time, the Fear Effect crew is back. Back in the late 90's/early 2000's, the Fear Effect saga brought players to a cyberpunk world full of espionage, digital terrorism, and a unique story brought together by the team of Hana, Glas, Rain, and Deke. While the original title and its sequel, Retro Helix, may serve as a nostalgic gaming experience, there were some major imperfections as far as gameplay and controls. Fear Effect Sedna comes jam-packed with the nostalgia, but is the gameplay overhaul better than what its predecessors could do?

QCF: Moss

n the media that we digest, there exist a plethora of fictional worlds that remain with many of those who have visited them for years on after, purely through the magic of that universe’s inherent intrigue. Video games in particular, have been able to craft exceptionally memorable settings because of the advantage of interaction that they can offer to the players who travel to their worlds, and the introduction of Virtual Reality has opened up a whole new plane of possibilities for world building.

Fledgling developer Polyarc recognized this potential, and sought out to produce a fantasy realm that permeated a larger-than-life sense of adventure that utilized all of the horsepower that the PlayStation VR peripheral could output with their puzzle-based platformer, MOSS. Even though there aren’t many contemporaries that can compare to the ambitious scale of Polyarc’s premier release, to begin with, the team was still able to produce a charming journey with a distinctive identity of its own, and follow through on a promising start towards what may be the first true killer-app that the PlayStation VR has seen since its launch.
