PAX Prime 2013: Hands-on with Ryse

ack in 2011 during Microsoft’s E3 Keynote, The people behind the color green were desperately pushing support for their new peripheral: Kinect. Ryse, a Roman gladiator action game was one of the promotions for that hands-free hotness Microsoft wanted to jazz everyone up about.

Flash forward to 2013, where all of Microsoft’s previous enthusiasm for the Kinect is significantly reduced, Ryse reemerges as an Xbox One launch title with Kinect support being wildly scaled back, so naturally, I found the development intriguing and decided to scope out just how well Crytek transitioned that shift in development, and finishing the nearly finished build the floor didn’t exactly project any positive prospect for the finished product come launch day.

This blend of MOBA style maps, twin stick shooter controls and fighting game balancing sounds complicated on paper, but after spending time with the game we are happy to report that it is done with expert precision.

PAX Prime 2013: Breaking into Killer Instinct

s the screen clashes against streaks of ink and the vociferous commentary from the Zealous announcer, Rare’s effort gradually shown brighter and brighter, and after getting some flicks of the arcade stick in, Killer Instinct is no soppy cash-in on cult-favorite nostalgia, it’s shaping up to be a labor of love instead.

PAX Prime 2013: Kicking down the Stinky Footboard

can admit that I have issues when it comes to playing complex video games. So many of the buttons are a strain to reach and different combinations are at times difficult to execute. This is greatly expanded whenever I need to play something on a PC using a keyboard and mouse. By the time I find out which key allows me to run, or how to change the camera mode I have already been taking out by the opposition. It would be nice if playing the game could be simplified in some way, perhaps with the assistance of a strangely named computer accessory. This is where the Stinky Footboard comes to the rescue.

PAX Prime 2013: Hands-On with Dying Light

othing frightens me more than the idea of someone behind me. The instinctive glance over the shoulder, hearing footsteps mimicking your own. Games are encasing this feeling of terror and helplessness into a game where sometimes your only chance of survival is to run. Dying Light takes elements of other original games and are able to bring it into the zombie/undead/infected space with great efficiency.
