The PPR Top Five Week of 10/25/09 - Horror Movies and Games
Hey everyone, this is Toast welcoming you to the Press Pause Radio Top Five for the week of October 25, 2009. And because my Top Five was too long to reasonably fit in the title, I will display it here. The Top Five this week is Horror Movies That Should Be Games. Sorry about the long winded title, I really could not figure out a easier way to say it. Hopefully the explanations below will be more informative. And quick side note; Horror Movie in this post is a very broad term. I understand that the five movies discussed may not be true horror movies, but they are all a part of the genre in some way. Okay now that the horror fanboys are satisfied, onto the Top Five. Enjoy!
Top Five Horror Movies That Should Be Games:
5. Shaun of the Dead - Shaun of the Dead is known for being a comedy classic. But there are still moments of real sadness and emotion throughout the film. What better man than Tim Schaffer, and Double Fine to make this game adaptation? Schaffer has made a career of creating humorous stories and dialogue, while still being able to convey deeper emotions, and darker subject matter. Double Fine could break the mold of the zombie video game just like Edgar Wright and company broke the mold of the zombie movie.
4. Ichi The Killer - Although not very well known to American audiences, Ichi the Killer is a gory and violent film that has a cult following that continues to grow. The film features very graphic violence and subject matter that involves the Yakuza and Japanese underworld. I believe that Rockstar could transition this into a very enjoyable game. The main character of the movie would be more troubled and disturbed than any Grand Theft Auto character has ever been.
3. Suicide Club - Let me start off by saying that overall I did not like Suicide Club. The premise sounds great; mass suicides all over Japan being somehow connected to a mysterious website. After watching the film at a convention years ago, I found that it was almost too bizarre and weird to enjoy. But after really thinking about it, I believe that Persona is very similar to this story. Atlus could easily make this movie into an awesome RPG. Both have a strange and disturbing story and rely heavily on Japanese culture.
2. Night of the Living Dead - Ok, so perhaps this one is too easy, seeing as how Left 4 Dead and other breakout zombie games have become so popular lately. But to me, this is where the idea of zombies started. Although not the first "zombie" film, it is the most well-known. I feel that Valve could release a black and white zombie shooter all based on Night of the Living Dead, although I'll settle for a great L4D mod. I bet there's already one out there somewhere.
1. The Shining -This classic film defines the horror genre with a brilliant performance by Jack Nicholson playing a winter caretaker at the Overlook Hotel. The story is disturbing and frightening, without resorting to excess amounts of gore. Legendary director Stanley Kubrik creates a mood that is very terrifying and unsettling, and in my opinion makes a film better than Stephen King's novel. If Ken Levine were to use the same elements used in Bioshock to create a video game version of the film, I believe it would make for an amazing video game experience.
